Reviews: ZzzKATzzzz (USA: CT) (2008/03/17):
very difficult read. very boring at times. didnt think it was necessary for the writer to share his story & other's along with McCandless'. not a great book. i expected more of the story to be about McCandless but guess there just wasnt enough known about what he did to make it a better story. sorry i wasted my time.

Jessica Scott (USA: IL) (2008/03/19):
As opposed to the other person who wrote a review on this book, I absolutely LOVED this book. Yes, in parts it was a tad bit boring, but I found it very interesting. It was a great tale of Chris' travels and his life. I feel like this book changed my life, it made me look at modern civilization in a very different way. And since reading it in December there isn't a day that goes by that I can't get this book or Chris out of my head. I admire him for the way he lived his life, for he lived it the way he wanted. And the things he did, many of us couldn't do. I would most definetely recommend this book!!

Denise (USA: IN) (2008/08/04):
I like the book I mean it wasn't a waste of my time, but I agree that there was a little too much info written about other characters. It was difficult for me to get past that at certain times. All in all I don't feel disappointed with the book but it's not one that I will read again. See the movie, it's more about Chris's adventure and not everyone else's experience. I enjoyed it more than the book.

Jim (USA: NY) (2009/07/05):
I think it is important to keep in mind that this is a work of non-fiction. While the film includes a lot of guesswork and conjecture, in the book Krakauer stuck to the facts, of which there are sadly few. While the film develops (or fabricates) McCandless' story much further, the book provides only what is truly known, with a little bit derived from that.

The other "characters" in the book are not there to advance the story or to entertain the reader, but to provide some context for what the piece actually is, a character study. Thus they shouldn't be considered a part of the "story line" but rather different views of the same archetype. All of them, like McCandless, were individuals whose desires looked beyond mainstream American values.

A great book, a definite must read for outdoorspeoeple, or people who sometimes just want to be reminded that their desires aren't entirely unprecedented.

Ariel (USA: CT) (2011/02/18):
the book that change my life completely. gave me a new outlook on the world and society. worth reading. i felt like i could really connect with McCandless with the way Krakauer set this book up

maynestacy (Japan) (2014/06/12):
I think I picked this one to read as it was recommended in current best seller book on happiness. Ironically, I found it a depressing and hard to relate to. I liked the author better than the guy Chris about who the biography is about, especially I liked how the author brought in his own experience to make sense of Chris' choices, and also made a great postulation as to why Chris died, and why he ventured out into the bush so ill-prepared. The ending made me reflect on my early twenties, the risks I took (and I am a conservative kind of gal) and that desire to explore and find adventure and live up to my ideals that most readers can also relate to having at that age.
