Despite being by an authoress formerly noted for her adult series', she works well with the restrictions of YA writing. The violence is minimal despite the plot being bloody in itself ( I mean, the sixteen year olds are running from people who basically screwed with their brains for fun and now want to kill them because the experiments created super powerful supernaturals), the characters have just the right amount of personality without being overly descriptive in the first few critical chapters. Overall, it's a great read for middle schoolers, high schoolers, and everyone else who wants a quick, sweetly done supernatural that ISN'T full of vampires. I can't be the only one sick of those bloodsuckers... I own three copies of this book. Though I'm legally an adult and have been for a few years, adult novels don't strike me like young adult novels do. The Darkest Powers Trilogy is one of those series' that I will never part with. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES (SUMMONING, AWAKENING, AND RECKONING) AS WELL AS ARMSTRONG'S NEWEST YA SERIES (BEGINNING WITH THE GATHERING).
